Always down for a good "Painkiller" reference.

I got the first shingles shot about three weeks ago. Other than a couple days of arm pain, it was fine. The second one knocked my wife on her butt a few months back. Guess it'll be my turn soon.

I got both shingles doses this year, the second one a month or so ago. Both of them knocked me loopy the day after. Fortunately both times I got them on a Thursday afternoon (I WFH Th and Fri) because especially the second time, I had to log off early and go take a nap. And I know at least 2 people who’ve had shingles (one younger than me) and both said it’s about as miserable as you can be.

I got shingles when I was ~28 and it was miserable. All over my neck and back of my head. Super gross. When I went to the doctor, he examined me, left for 5 minutes and came back in. First thing he said to me: "Well, it's not leprosy." Mind you, I had never met this doctor before in my life. I love a good joke, but that wasn't it. Ultimately, it ended with my now wife going to the doctor to see if she needed the vaccine. Turns out, she did. But they never called her back with the results. She called two weeks later to ask and they said "Yeah, you need to get that". Amazing stuff. Dorf Romantik was fun on the PC. I'll have to check out your review.

I know it's a bit later, but you could also be guys you weren't high enough on or people who are way better than even your 99th% thoughts. Brent Rooker went from being a guy you liked but had 10th in the Twins system to being a top 10 MVP pick. Seth Lugo has an argument for a Cy Young.

hey Keith, not sure this would be a player you "got wrong" but it would be interesting to hear about Lawrence Butler's transformation from a pretty putrid first half to maybe becoming a guy over the second half of the year - things we should be looking for in batted ball data? Adjustment time from AAA to MLB? Thanks for considering!

I got shingles at age 37 (on my head/neck) and didn't think it was too bad (would take it over the flu), except for the fact that my daughter was about 8 months old at the time, and she'd been sitting on my lap for like half of the 3-day stretch before I realized what the heck these itchy spots were (under my beard, one sideburn, and what was left of my hair, so I couldn't see them in detail, in my defense) and why I was having cluster headaches -- didn't think much of them because my dad also gets them. So she's just about the only child in America in 2024 whose parents aren't culture warriors who's had chicken pox. (Children get the pox vax at age 1 year.)

Will be getting the vaccine regardless when I've crossed 50. (Almost there!) Thank you for the heads-up.

As a Nationals fan/follower/writer, I feel compelled to suggest Jake Irvin and/or Luis García Jr., but they might seem boring to you as well.

Not so much boring as not quite good enough to merit inclusion. Irvin's headed for some regression with the platoon split and the huge HR rate. Parker too, for that matter. Wondering if Rizzo might try to sneak either off in a trade this winter.

Fair enough, although I do think the Nationals did something right at the MLB level with their younger pitchers, as Irvin, Parker, and Herz all had significant drops in their walk rates this year (Herz in particular was all over the place in Rochester before he came up). Maybe the Nats have finally figured out *something* in the area of pitching development, given how long it had been since they produced even a league-average SP?

Interesting. My experience with the shingles vaccine was the opposite: the first one hit me hard—night time chills and aches like you describe—while the second dose had minimal impact. I’ve always felt fine outside of arm pain after flu shots, and of the five mRNA COVID shots I’ve had I only felt poorly the day after my second dose.

My symptoms weren't as bad as what you described. But shingles 2 definitely hit harder than flu and covid vaccines.

I got shingles while pregnant. No fun at all! I still have residual numbness and nerve spasms in the area on my forehead where I had them, thirty years later. The shingles vaccine made my arm more sore than the flu shot or Covid booster, but didn’t make me sick.

You missed on Austin Wells' ability to catch. He's actually above average in the public defensive metrics.

I have no faith in the public defensive metrics for catchers. He lets a lot of balls get by him, even as a part-timer.

I was going to mention Wells also. Didn’t you expect he wouldn’t be able to stick at the position? At the very least, he seems to have surpassed the low bar many set for him when he was drafted.

I am interested in your take on Volpe. This is a player you loved who has been very very disappointing offensively for two years running. Not exactly what you asked but I respect your opinion.

Mark Vientos? Don’t think you were too high on him.

Shingles vax by far the worst for me.

I had Vientos on my top 100 twice, 2019 and 2022.

In March of this year, a specialist doc I see for an underlying GI condition recommended I get the shingles vaccine due to an immunosuppressive drug I take. I was only 43 at the time so they recommended I wait until seeing my PCP at my annual physical in June. Then I got shingles in April, smh. Also had Bell’s Palsy simultaneously, which together = Ramsay Hunt Syndrome. Not fun.

I had the shingles in my ear so my equilibrium was f’ed — I couldn’t get out of bed for a week and was constantly nauseous and dizzy. Fortunately I’m fully recovered now but still waiting the six months from initial onset before getting the vaccine, which will be in October. I will probably have to pay out of pocket since I’m under 50 and don’t think my employer-provided insurance — though very good — will cover it.

Appreciate your words of caution. But I concur — everyone should get it to avoid shingles.

Garrett Crochet? Did you say he was more likely a reliever? Maybe it’s someone else I’m confusing.

Getting Covid/flu first week of Oct. It’s a tradition at this point.

Crochet is a great call and yes, I said reliever, between the pitch mix and the shoulder stuff in college.

Jackson Holliday? (As I sob uncontrollably while shouting small sample size)
